Beneath The Surface by Lynn H. Blackburn

She thought that she would be safe when she moved back home... But she was dead wrong.

Hey Readers!
I am so excited to show you guys my second March 2018 "Must Read" - Beneath the Surface by Lynn H. Blackburn.  Beneath the Surface is a Romantic Suspense novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat and I can guarantee you that it will be very hard to put down.
I would recommend this book if you:

  • Like to read books by Lynette Eason and Dani Pettrey.
  • Like to read suspense novels
  • Like a good mystery
  • Like to watch TV shows like CSI,
  • Just want to read a great new book!
So here is the story,
Beneath the Surface is the story of Leigh Weston, a oncology nurse practitioner who just moved into her childhood home in Carrington , North Carolina. She moved back home because she needed a change of scenery after a narrow escape from an obsessed patient. She thought she left all her troubles behind but it appears that she has landed in trouble again.  Less then a year after she moved back home, She receives a visit from homicide investigator Ryan Parker - who informs her that a body was discovered in the lake behind her house, near her dock.  As awful as that was , Leigh did not think much of it besides how tragic and horrible it was ... Until it appears that she may be next.  One morning, shortly after the body was discovered, She was halfway home from work when her brakes gave out. She tried everything to stop the car, but not even the emergency brake would work. She finally made the decision to go into a ditch - however, she did not realize just how deep the ditch was...
Ryan Parker has known Leigh since they were young. ( He was best friends with her brother) He promised her brother that he would watch out for her while he was out of the Country.  So when his dive team discovered a body in the lake behind her house, He really did not want involve her. But they needed her permission to use her dock and to see her security cameras. When he hears that she was in a car accident, His heart literally felt like it was ripped out of his chest. Thankfully, she was not injured too bad, but the news just keeps getting worse for her. When they investigated her accident ,they discovered that it was no accident that her brakes went out. It appears as if someone cut her brakes while she was at work.  The police think that Leigh's accident and the body found in the lake are two different crimes, But Ryan believes that they might be connected.  The only problem with his theory is that he can't seem to find anyone who would want to hurt Leigh - nor can he find any enemies. But when there is another attempt on Leigh's life, Ryan knows he has to hurry to find the killer because they are getting bolder and time appears to be running out for Leigh.   Will Ryan's team be able to protect Leigh and find the killer or will the killer be able to silence Leigh forever???

What did I think?
So this is Lynn H. Blackburn's first full size novel and book one of the Dive Team Investigations series and it was awesome!  The characters each have so much personality and I loved reading about the relationship between Leigh and Ryan.  The plot was so engaging that it started on page 1 and did not stop until the very last word on page 337. It also had so many twists and turns and dead ends that it keeps you guessing until the nail biting conclusion. The book has the perfect blend of romance and suspense. I will say that although reading about the body found in the lake was gross and the condition that it was in was atrocious - There was nothing violent, descriptive or morbid ( no blood and guts) in the book. Overall I thought the book was great and am looking forward to reading book 2 which comes out this November!!!
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars ***** and the Emoji rating is 😎

Phoebe's Light by Suzanne Woods Fisher

" Not today, I will not worry about anything on this special day..." Phoebe Starbuck , Phoebe's Light by Suzanne Woods Fisher.

Hey Readers!
I am so excited to tell you about my first March 2018 "Must Read" Phoebe's Light by Suzanne Woods Fisher.  So this is a Historical Romance novel set in the year 1767 on the beautiful Nantucket Island and unlike the books that she has previously written, This book is about Quakers instead of the Amish that she typically writes about. I would recommend this book if you :
  • Have read any of Suzanne Woods Fisher's books,
  • Like to read books by Wanda E. Brunstetter and Beverly Lewis  ( Mrs. Woods Fisher's books are similar to these two amazing authors, but the writing style is different. Personally I prefer the way Mrs. Woods Fisher writes)
  • Want to check out a book that shows the "sometimes treacherous shores of Quaker life",
  • Want to read an amazing new book,
  • Want to check out a author whose books you have not read yet.

So here is the story,
Phoebe's Light is the story of Phoebe Starbuck who has been taking care of her father since the day her mother died from illness. She has always worried about whether they would have enough money to pay for food or worrying about her father's latest business venture ( He had tried several things before, but had not found anything that worked... yet)  But on the day she turned eighteen, she was determined that she would not worry about anything. Her father surprised her by giving her her Great-Grandmother Mary's journal. Her Great Grandmother was a member of one of the founding families on Nantucket Island so Phoebe was both excited and humbled by such an amazing gift. Shortly after this, she runs into Captain Phineas Foulger, the man that she has been in love with for years.  She is thrilled when he proposes and they are married soon after. Phoebe convinces the captain to take her along on his next voyage and they soon set sail. Phoebe is so excited about this adventure that she is about to go on that nothing could dim her excitement... except when she finds out that her father sent Matthew Mitchell to be her "Minder". Phoebe's father was worried that the Captain would hurt Phoebe so he sent Matthew to make sure that she stayed safe. She decides that she will just ignore him  and they soon set sail, Phoebe gets seasick immediately and cannot seem to keep food down. The very sight of food makes her sick.  So as a distraction, she starts reading her Great Grandmother Mary's journal. She learns of the heartaches and fear that her Great Grandmother had growing up and the wisdom that she had during her teenage and early adult years. Unfortunately as the voyage progresses Phoebe's health gets worse and she discovers that the man she married was not who she thought he was.
Matthew Mitchell agreed to be part of Captain Foulger's crew as a favor for Phoebe Starbuck's father. He knew that her father saved his father when they were younger so he agrees to watch out for Phoebe. He had always been in love with her and was heartbroken when he heard the news of her marriage to the captain. Regardless of his feelings though , He would watch out for her safety.  He is worried when he sees how seasick she has become and is furious when it appears that her husband does not care how she is doing.  He has to be cautious though around the crew when referring to Phoebe because the crew believed it was bad luck to bring a women on the voyage and were blaming her for everything that went wrong. If Matthew still prayed, He would pray that God would comfort Phoebe and restore her health but he is sure that God does not listen to him anymore. Then Phoebe becomes deathly ill, Will Matthew reach out in faith to God to healing?
Is there anything that Matthew can do to save Phoebe or will this adventure that she wanted so badly to go on be her last one?

So what did I think?
Wow. That is the first thing that comes to my mind. I have always loved Mrs Suzanne's books but this one is AMAZING!  This is the first book in the Nantucket Legacy Series and I cannot wait for the next book Minding the Light.  This is the first book that she has done that is about a Quaker girl instead of a Amish one and I really enjoyed the different perspective. The characters do say thee and nay instead of you or no ( there are a few more words, but these are the most prominent)  but I thought that it really added character to the story. Some parts of the story are told by Phoebe and some parts are told by Mary as though we were really reading her journal pages that were torn out and put in between the chapters. Overall the story has everything in it,  romance, heartache, danger , betrayal and faith. I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars ***** and on the Emoji rating 😍

High Treason by DiAnn Mills

" Am I talking to a God-fearing Texas gal?"
" Is this a stumbling block for you?"
" Only if this God thing gets in the way of your job performance."
" Faith just might be in your best interest considering what's happened in the last 24 hours."   -Monica Alden and Kord Davidson, High Treason by DiAnn Mills

Hey Readers,
I cannot believe that it is already March!!!
*sigh*  So even though it's March , I have the last book on my February "Must Reads" list for you to check out. High Treason by DiAnn Mills is a fast paced romantic suspense novel that will leave you guessing until the very last chapter. I would recommend this book if you:

  • Like to read any books by DiAnn Mills,
  • Like to read books by Lynette Eason, Dani Pettrey or Dee Henderson,
  • Like to watch TV shows about Law Enforcement agencies ( like CSI Miami, Blue Bloods and NYPD Blue )
  • Just want to read an amazing book.

So on to the story,
FBI Agent Kord Davidson is assigned to Saudi Prince Omar Bin Talal's security detail once he arrives in the United States. The Prince had decided to make the trip to Houston Texas with his Mother and two sisters in hopes of finding a cancer treatment for his dying mother. However within hours of entering the U.S. there is an assassination attempt on the Prince's life that fatally wounds a member of his security detail.  This attack prompts the FBI to team up with the CIA and they assign CIA Operative Monica Alden as Kord's "Assistant".  Kord immediately disagrees with this because he does not need any help guarding the Prince and he especially does not need help from a female CIA operative.  But he is given a choice, He ether works with Monica or they will reassign him.

Monica Alden is used to being treated differently because she is a female operative. But she was assigned to this security detail because of her unique skills ( such as lip reading) and her experiences in the Middle East and she will not allow Kord or Prince Omar to keep her from doing her job. When she discovers that Kord is very good friends with Prince Omar, She is worried that he will not be able to objectively look for the threat against the royal family. Forced to put their feelings aside, Monica and Kord work together utilizing each other's skills  to search for clues and protect the royal family.  The assassin however has proved him/her self to be incredibly skilled and has left behind no clues as to his/her identity But when there is another assassination attempt, It confirms Monica's suspicions... The traitor has to be someone in the Prince's inner circle, Someone that they trust,

Will Kord and Monica be able to discover who the traitor is in time?

What did I think?
So this is book three in the FBI Task Force series but it is not connected to the previous novels, so it can be read as a stand alone. I loved the heroine of the story Monica, because of her strong belief in Jesus and her boldness that she would be willing to witness to a Muslim Prince. (the prince asked her about it because he had overheard a conversation) . The story lagged a bit in the middle but the plot kept you engaged until the very last page. Though there were  two people fatally wounded, The descriptions were not graphic. Overall I thought the book was Fantastic and would rate it 5 out of 5 stars ***** and the emoji rating is 😃

Don't forget to check out DiAnn Mills other books ( they are awesome!!! )
